How to Get Your Companies House Personal Code

Every director and person with significant control may need to verify their identity with Companies House. After you complete the process, Companies House gives you an 11-character Personal Code.

You may need to give this code to your accountant so they can connect your verified identity to your company role and file documents for you.

The government verification process is free. You can complete it yourself using the official GOV.UK service. We also offer an optional service if you would rather ask us to handle it.

What is a Personal Code?

  • It is an 11-character code issued after you verify your identity.
  • It belongs to you personally, not to your company.
  • You can use it for each company role you hold.
  • You should only share it with Companies House or a trusted professional acting for you.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • A biometric passport or another accepted photo ID document
  • Your mobile phone
  • Your current home address
  • The year you moved into your home
  • An email address for your GOV.UK One Login

The GOV.UK service will tell you which verification options are available to you. If you do not have the required photo ID, it may offer another route, such as verification using bank details or in-person verification.

The process

  1. Open the official GOV.UK verification page.
  2. Sign in to GOV.UK One Login or create an account if you do not already have one.
  3. Answer the questions and follow the instructions to prove your identity.
  4. Use the GOV.UK One Login app if the service asks you to download it.
  5. When the process is complete, Companies House will provide your Personal Code.

Keep your details consistent. Enter your name and date of birth exactly as they appear on your official documents. A mismatch can stop the verification process from completing.

What to do when you receive your code

  1. Keep the code somewhere safe.
  2. Reply to the email from Sync Accountants.
  3. Send us your Personal Code.

We will use it when we connect your verified identity to the company role covered by your Confirmation Statement.

Why might I need two identity checks?

Companies House has its own identity verification process. Accountants also have legal identity-checking duties before they can act for clients.

These are separate checks run by separate organisations. That means you may need to photograph your ID twice.

The Companies House check gives you your Personal Code. Our check confirms your identity for our own legal and professional requirements.

  • Do not share your password with us or anyone else.
  • Only share your Personal Code with Companies House or a trusted professional acting for you.
  • Do not let someone use your identity to create or run a company you do not control.
